Orthopaedics

Orthopaedics is a subspecialty that focuses on the musculoskeletal system of the body. It deals with conditions of the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. There are two types of orthopaedists – surgical and nonsurgical. Nonsurgical orthopedists treat patients using physical medicine, including physiatrists and rehabilitation specialists.

A healthy musculoskeletal system is important to fuel a healthy, active lifestyle. Orthopaedic specialists at Medcy Hospitals ensure your range of motion is not hindered by conditions that can be effectively treated with world-class facilities and advanced treatment options tailored to you.

Types of Orthopaedics Treatment at Medcy Hospitals

The following surgical and nonsurgical orthopaedic services and treatments are provided at Medcy.

Knee Arthroscopy

Knee arthroscopy is a surgical procedure that doctors conduct to diagnose and treat knee injuries. An arthroscope is inserted via a tiny incision to take a look at the knee which helps the doctor diagnose the condition and treat it. It is a minimally invasive procedure since small cuts are required to conduct the procedure.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Surgery

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve is compressed, causing weakness, numbness, and tingling, in the arm and hand. Surgery is recommended when the symptoms are severe or do not respond to other treatments. Two types of surgeries may be conducted – endoscopic or open surgery.

Shoulder Arthroscopy

A minimally invasive surgery, shoulder arthroscopy, is conducted to assess, diagnose, and treat shoulder conditions. This procedure is performed when nonsurgical treatments for shoulder pain are ineffective and further evaluation is necessary to determine the underlying issue.

An arthroscope is inserted through small incisions, which helps the surgeon look at the shoulder and the source of the injury. Surgical tools are used to restore mobility if a shoulder repair is needed.

Rotator Cuff Surgery

A rotator cuff refers to the tendons and muscles holding the shoulder. A rotator cuff injury can occur immediately or over time upon repetitive use of the muscles. Surgical repair may be necessary for an injured rotator cuff. It could involve shaving bone spurs or repairing torn tendons or muscles. Surgery aims to restore shoulder function, flexibility, and pain relief.

Tennis Or Golfer’s Elbow Treatment

In a golfer’s elbow, pain is felt in the tendons connecting forearm muscles to the bony bump inside the elbow. It can spread to the wrist. The tennis elbow is the same, but the pain is on the outside of the elbow. Treatment involves medication, physical therapy, and surgery in severe cases.

Knee Arthroplasty

Also known as knee replacement surgery, knee arthroplasty is conducted to restore mobility and function in a worn-down or injured knee joint. During the procedure, the damaged portions of the knee joint are replaced with artificial implants, allowing for improved mobility and reduced pain.

Hip Arthroplasty

A hip replacement surgery is also called a hip arthroplasty. The procedure replaces a damaged or diseased hip joint with an artificial one. It aims to relieve pain, improve mobility, and enhance overall hip function. Depending on the condition, a total hip replacement or a partial hip replacement may be recommended.

Paget’s Disease Treatment

Paget’s disease of bone refers to a chronic condition that affects the bone remodelling process, causing the new bone tissue to become weak, brittle, and sometimes deformed. Treatment is symptomatic, resorting to medication and physical therapy. Surgery is recommended for severe arthritis, fractures, or deformations.

Arthritis Treatment

Arthritis is when the joints swell and become tender, causing pain, stiffness, and discomfort. The two types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Treatment includes medications, physical therapy and, for advanced conditions – surgery such as joint repair, fusion, or replacement.

Torn Meniscus Treatment

A torn meniscus is a common knee injury that can cause severe pain and swelling in the knee. Treatment for smaller tears includes rest and ice for the pain to fade. Major injuries require physical therapy and surgery to repair the torn meniscus.

Hip Replacement

In hip replacement surgery, the surgeon replaces the diseased part of the hip joint with artificial parts to improve the mobility and functioning of the hip joint. The ball and socket are replaced in a total hip replacement surgery. In a partial hip replacement surgery, just the ball is replaced.

Knee Replacement

Patients with osteoarthritis or those with injured knee joints get a knee replacement to replace the worn-down knee joint with artificial parts. It improves knee mobility, reducing pain and improving quality of life.

Knee Ligament Surgery (ACL)

The ACL is a tough band of tissue in the knee’s centre that controls the shin bone’s rotation and forward movement. Common knee injuries can tear the ACL, which may require surgery to repair the damage. A torn ACL is replaced with a healthy tendon from the person or an organ donor, usually taken from the front of the knee or hamstring.
